An update has emerged on Leeds United and their search for a manager to replace Jesse Marsch in the dugout…
What’s the latest on Steven Gerrard to Leeds?
According to Football Insider, the Whites are prepared to re-explore the idea of bringing a head coach in on an interim basis until the end of the campaign if they lose to Southampton next weekend.
The report claims that the club wanted to give Michael Skubala until the end of the season to turn things around after the youth team coach stepped up following Marsch’s dismissal.
It is stated that Leeds have discussed the possibility of bringing in the duo of Steven Gerrard and Gary McAllister on a short-term deal in an attempt to keep the team in the Premier League.
Another howler
Victor Orta could repeat the howler he played with the appointment of Marsch by replacing the American coach with the former Aston Villa and Rangers boss.
The ex-RB Leipzig manager arrived at Elland Road last year with no experience in managing a struggling team. He had only finished as low as 11th before coming to England and had only lost more than ten games in a campaign twice in eight seasons.
His lack of experience at the bottom end of the table almost proved costly last season as the 49-year-old scraped survival by finishing 17th in the table – winning three of his 12 matches in charge during the 2021/22 campaign.
His dire form carried on into 2022/23 as the tactician won just four of his 20 games in the dugout before being relieved of his duties earlier this year.
American reporter Hunter Walker described the potential appointment of Gerrard as a “disaster” and that is what it is likely to be based on the 42-year-old’s experience so far.
The former England international, like Marsch prior to his spell in Yorkshire, has never endured the scrap of a relegation battle and may not be suited to the dogfight that is ahead of Leeds in the coming months.
Gerrard never finished lower than second in over three years at Ibrox in Scotland and took over a midtable side in Aston Villa last season, which ended in him finishing 14th in the table.
The 42-year-old then started the current campaign in awful fashion as his side lost six of their first 11 games, winning twice, something that does not suggest he is the man Orta should be bringing in to steady the ship to avoid relegation.
Therefore, the Whites sporting director would be repeating the howler he had with Marsch by appointing Gerrard. Indeed, the English tactician does not have the relevant experience to deal with the situation the club are in with the Yorkshire outfit 19th in the table with 15 games to play.
