Speaking after Manchester United’s 2-0 defeat to Liverpool, Roy Keane has lambasted Anthony Martial for his crucial miss in the game.
What did he say?
The Red Devils fell to a loss against their arch-rivals, a result that means they are still five points behind fourth-placed Chelsea in that all-important race for the final Champions League qualification spot.
But things could perhaps have been different had Martial not spurned a golden chance for a goal when the score-line was at 1-0. And Keane criticised the Frenchman for his miss, and revealed the moment essentially summed up his United career.

He said (as quoted by The Manchester Evening News): “They had a big chance with Martial. You try to stay in the game of football and there was plenty of effort from United. Martial, you come to Manchester United you have to go bang in the big moment. For me, that sums up his career in a nutshell at Man United.
“Excellent build up play but you hit that target, no excuses. You hit that target, the big strikers at Man United who are remembered by the supporters, they certainly hit the target and hit the back of the net. That’s why that guy is not quite good enough for Man United. That moment summed them up.”
Too harsh
Whilst Martial has struggled for inconsistency at United – he has a goal-record of 59 strikes in 198 games – Keane’s judgement of the former AS Monaco forward is slightly too harsh. The Frenchman only turned 24 last month, and is performing in a team that is struggling as a whole – the Red Devils after all have yet to win the Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure.
Mourinho’s produced some incredible footballing stars – how much do you know about them?
And the chance Keane is referring to, was hardly the easiest of opportunities either. It was a half-volley that required a difficult technique to ensure he stayed over the ball to keep it from rising over, and add that to the fact it was a game at Anfield against United’s arch-rivals, and it is not difficult to see why Martial may have missed. The Frenchman hardly had a kick of the ball all game, registering just 37 touches. To then slam him for not being good enough because he missed his one chance, is a bit of a stretch.
Meanwhile, Manchester United fans discuss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s “embarrassing” decision.
