Manchester United and the wider football community are mourning the loss of Denis Law, one of the most celebrated players in the club’s history.

Known as "The King" and "The Lawman," Law passed away at the age of 84 after battling Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. Law's passing marks the end of an era, as he was the last surviving member of United’s famed “Holy Trinity,” alongside George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton. Both Best and Charlton had passed away in 2005 and 2023, respectively.

This tally places him third on United's all-time scoring list, behind only Wayne Rooney and Bobby Charlton. Known for his flair, determination, and clinical finishing, Law was a fan favourite, earning him the title of the “King of the Stretford End”.

United paid their respects and wrote: "Everyone at Manchester United is mourning the loss of Denis Law, the King of the Stretford End, who has passed away, aged 84. With 237 goals in 404 appearances, he will always be celebrated as one of the club’s greatest and most beloved players.
"The ultimate goalscorer, his flair, spirit and love for the game made him the hero of a generation. Our deepest condolences go out to Denis’s family and many friends. His memory will live on forever more.
"We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his wellbeing and care, past and much more recently. We know how much people supported and loved him and that love was always appreciated and made a difference. Thank you.”
Law’s family also issued a heartfelt statement, expressing their sorrow and gratitude for the love and support he received throughout his life. It read: "It is with a heavy heart that we tell you our father Denis Law has sadly passed away. He fought a tough battle but finally, he is now at peace. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his wellbeing and care, past and much more recently. We know how much people supported and loved him and that love was always appreciated and made the difference.”

Born in Aberdeen in February 1940, Law’s football journey was unique. Despite his Scottish roots, he never played for a Scottish club. Instead, his professional career began at Huddersfield Town in 1955, joining the club straight out of school. Five years later, he made a British record transfer to Manchester City for £55,000.
In 1961, Law ventured abroad, signing with Italian club Torino. However, his time in Italy was marred by difficulties on and off the field, prompting his swift return to England in 1962. He joined United that year and became an integral part of Sir Matt Busby’s rebuilding project following the tragic Munich air disaster. He played a pivotal role in the club’s resurgence, scoring the opening goal in the 1963 FA Cup final against Leicester City to secure the trophy. His contributions were also instrumental in United's First Division title wins in 1965 and 1967.
